Baldock Town Letchworth entertained strugglers Hertford Heath on Tuesday evening and the 2-0 scoreline does little to reflect the total dominance of the home side. Credit, however, must go to Hertford Heath as they never gave up battling and ran themselves into the ground on the excellent playing surface.
Despite all their possession and territorial advantage, Baldock had nothing to show for it until Jack Gregson broke the deadlock after half an hour. Wayne Blows had kept his place in the starting line up after scoring two goals three days earlier and it was Gregson’s one-two with Blows that opened up the defence for Gregson to calmly score when put through.
Baldock continued to enjoy the vast majority of possession, but a distinct lack of quality with the final ball frustrated Town Manager Steve King and certainly meant the game was far from over. Late in the half, a rare decent cross found Blows with the goal at his mercy but the centre forward wasn’t sure whether to head or volley it, in the end he did neither and the chance had passed.
The second half started brightly and Baldock seemed destined for an early second goal to ‘put the game to bed’, but it never came and Baldock slowly lost their momentum.
Just before the hour mark King sent on Harry Holland to liven up proceedings and he had the desired effect immediately. The tempo increased and that bit of quality King & Scott Grant had asked for was all of a sudden apparent.
It didn’t take long for Gregson to get his second and kill the game with a very similar strike to that of the first half. When sent clear, Jack picked his spot and coolly finished for his fifth goal in two games sending him to the top of the goalscoring charts.
Further chances came and went for Baldock and it wasn’t until the 90th minute that Hertford enjoyed their first attempt on goal which Farmer did well to save.
Manager King said after the win; “I am just pleased with the three points particularly after Saturday’s epic. It was also good to be able to rest a few in the process. It wasn't a classic, but we are now top of the Premier Division and hopefully we’ll be able to enjoy it for a while!”
